Research

In her doctoral dissertation Anne is developing a sensitive and body-based analysis method for the study of musical expression. Her main argument is that a listener understands the singer's expression with her own body.

This kind of "listening with your whole body" is known, for example, among singing teachers, although it is not usually verbalized. Anne is using a phenomenological approach as well as Daniel Stern's theory of vitality affects to verbalize this bodily knowledge of a listener.

In her work she is using Icelandic singer Björk as her analysis example. In her analysis she uses different kinds of listening methods. With analytic listening she approaches the voice qualities, and with emphatic listening the vitality affects and expression of a singer.

A Singer's expression consists of the small nuances one can sense from the voice of a singer. In the level of vitality affects the singer's expression can be felt as something more subtle than in the level of categorical affects (sorrow, joy etc.). These expressive nuances arise from the singer's body movements that create her voice. Singer can, for example, make a sound with sudden, expansive or tense movements. A listener can understand these qualities of movement in her/his own affective body. In this way a listener can actually be moved by a singer's expression.
